I’m more concerned about the long term future of Wyoming than I am about who represents House District 54 for the next two years. I feel that our future will depend primarily on the beliefs of the people regarding the proper role of government in their lives and what they expect their representatives to do while in office. My campaign has not focused on political strategies like name recognition, party alignment, or endorsements. I just want to do what I can with what I have to tell my neighbors the truth.
The truth is that when we give up liberty by asking for more and more government control over the important aspects of our lives, we get the opposite of liberty; we get slavery. And eventually, we end up living like slaves, never seeing the majority of what we produce and enduring substandard education and healthcare, stagnant businesses, and corrupt charity and morality that are all forced upon us by bureaucrats in distant cities and soldiers on our streets. As slaves, we are assets and so our masters must make sure we are fed, clothed, sheltered, healthy, and educated just enough to do our jobs.
This analogy may sound outlandish, but it is no exaggeration. Every country or state, large or small, past or present that pursues the path of increasing government control has opened themselves to internal turmoil, foreign invasion, or economic collapse. In Wyoming, we have been lucky so far. Our low population and abundant natural resources have been a buffer against these effects, but they will not protect us forever. Our state government must not just push back vigorously against the federal government, but also stop trying to emulate their failed policies.
For far too long, we have been lied to. Politicians say they will make life better for us. They just need new programs, more money, more time, or more control. But time and time again, they fail. Central planning has a tendency to work only for the benefit of one group in the end – the central planners. Stop believing the lie. Take back the money and the control of your lives, cancel the government programs. We are not children of the state. We can educate ourselves, we can plan for our own retirement and healthcare, we can organize our own charities, we can run our own businesses and we can do it all better than any politician. When criminals use force or fraud against their neighbors we expect the government to deliver justice. For everything else, liberty is the best choice.
When once we decide to pursue the blessings of liberty for
ourselves and our posterity, we must tread lightly. We have
gradually traveled very far down the road of slavery and the
journey off this road must be undertaken with mutual respect
for our fellow travelers. However, we must not delay. The
road to slavery ends in chaos and despair, so we must turn
back now. | Archives
